The Time Has Come for the Canadian E-log Is Here!

Did you know that the «e-log» will be mandatory in Canada as of June 12th 2021?

What is an e-log?

What is an e-log? E-log is an electronic logging device (ELD) that automatically records driving time and hours of service. The device is synchronized with the engine of the vehicle and provides a GPS for movement and distance driven. Drivers will have to use a terminal equipped with a screen (Tablet, Smartphone, etc.) in order to manage their daily logs. The terminal must be accessible during controller inspections and show activity reports in an electronic format.

Indeed, all drivers driving a truck, tractor or trailer, or a combination of these, whose registered gross weight is greater than 4,500 kg, will therefore have to comply with this new regulations as of the month of June 2021.

However, there are 3 exceptions:

  • The driver does is job inside of a 160 km radius from his or her base
  • The driver must have observed a period of REST (OFF-DUTY) for a minimum of 8 hours before leaving his or her home port
  • The driver is driving a short term rental vehicle for 30 days or less (in this case, a paper log will do if the driver operates outside the 160 km radius)

There are several e-log solutions and suppliers that will comply with this new obligation. It is very important to make sure that the device use dis approved and compliant with the government specifications.
